Supporting Students Series: Universal Design for Learning (UDL) 3.0 in Action: Igniting Learner Joy and Agency
Friday, October 24, 2025 :: 11:30-12:30 PM
Hybrid | Hyflex
Intended Audience: CMU Faculty
Facilitated by: Gabrielle Likavec & Roop Jayaraman
In this interactive session, we’ll explore the transformative potential of the newly released Universal Design for Learning Guidelines 3.0 (CAST, July 2024), with a focus on relationship-building, community, and the whole learner. Grounded in the expanded UDL framework, this session highlights how centering learner identity, joy, play, and interdependence can foster more connected classrooms and support success for all students. Through case studies and collaborative activities tailored for college classrooms, we’ll unpack strategies across the three UDL principles: Engagement, Representation, and Action & Expression that support:
Community and connection:
Designing to affirm who learners are and how they relate to others
Joyful and restorative learning:
Embedding empathy, emotional capacity, and collective care into course design
Challenge exclusionary norms:
Identify and dismantle barriers to student success in curricula and instructional design
Participants will leave with practical, student-centered tools they can apply right away to cultivate agency, trust, and meaningful learning for all students, without compromising rigor.
Lunch will be provided to registered attendees.
NOTE: This session will be offered in a HyFlex format, which will allow registrants to attend either Face to Face in Park 413 or via WebEx using the link included below.
