Supporting and Empowering Diverse Learners Series: Universal Design for Learning As a Framework for Equity in the University Classroom
Wednesday, April 23, 2025 :: 2:00-3:30 PM
Hybrid | Hyflex
Intended Audience: Faculty
"Universities are seeing an increase in the number of disabled students pursuing post-secondary education, which is exciting and challenging. Through this series, participants will learn to identify, challenge, and dismantle structural and attitudinal barriers that impede the success of students with disabilities. Through engaging discussions and case studies, the session will focus on creating more inclusive and accessible learning spaces by addressing curriculum design, classroom practices, and institutional policies that may unintentionally marginalize students with disabilities. This series will offer recommendations for supporting diverse learners and making higher education more accessible for all students. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for reducing barriers to learning, fostering an inclusive culture, and promoting equity.
This training session introduces Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a powerful framework for promoting equity and accessibility in higher education. Participants will receive an overview of the core principles of UDL—offering multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression—and explore how these strategies can be applied to create more inclusive and flexible learning environments. The session will also discuss the challenges and barriers that have slowed the adoption of UDL in universities, including institutional inertia and misconceptions about its applicability. By examining UDL through the lens of equity, instructors will learn how to proactively address diverse student needs and remove barriers to learning, creating a more accessible and engaging experience for all learners."
